Direction Finding
Direction Finding powers two kinds of incomplete information: the A/N audio courses used to locate rumored sites and the station network used to detect enemy activity. Neither system gives a free exact position without the required player action and infrastructure.
A/N rumor signal. SRS is required. Tycoon checks that the radio is tuned to the rumor's exact frequency and modulation, then plays the signal through DCS audio. The mechanic is inspired by the historical four-course low-frequency radio range.
| What you hear | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Continuous, rhythm-free tone | The aircraft is on one of the course lines. |
| Morse A (dit-dah) with N faintly underneath | The aircraft is in an A sector away from the course line. |
| Morse N (dah-dit) with A faintly underneath | The aircraft is in an N sector away from the course line. |
| Repeated Z marker | The aircraft is directly above the site's overhead cone. |
As the dominant A or N becomes clearer, the aircraft is farther from the neighbouring course line. The pattern reverses on the opposite side of the site, so A does not permanently mean left or right. The Gazelle receives a wider and slightly longer-range course than other airframes.
Station network. Mapped airfields can build Loop, Adcock and Watson-Watt stations. Settlements and airfields relay from station level 1, Factories from level 2 and Sources from level 3. A relay listens about 22 km from itself; the station airfield listens about 30 km.
| Station | Cost | Network reach | Rumor-direction sector |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loop (level 1) | 8 Lumber | 40 km | 60 degrees |
| Adcock (level 2) | 8 Steel | 55 km | 45 degrees |
| Watson-Watt (level 3) | 6 Industrial Parts | 70 km | 35 degrees |
A bare airfield anchors a 75-degree rumor direction. Higher station levels narrow that sector and expand threat-network reach, but a raw threat contact remains bearing-only.
Calibration. Terrain widens a station's sector without moving its centre. To calibrate it, fly 8-12 km from the station at 300-900 m above ground and remain in one 30-degree sector for 20 seconds. Twelve sectors persist across sorties and apply to the whole station network. Calibration resets after an upgrade, is fully effective for 180 in-game days, fades by day 365 and cannot remove night error.
Threat fixes. A raw threat cone has no range. With a Direction-Finding Control Centre, two reports may form a bounded plotted fix or an exact point if the resulting area is sufficiently small. The Control Centre requires three Adcock stations.
