Airfields
An airfield is a DCS map airfield marked with a Tycoon tent. It neither produces nor consumes cargo. Players use it to store cargo of every kind and to build four site upgrades. Airplanes can land there, so it is where the C-130J-30 hands cargo over to helicopters.
Storing and delivering
An airfield takes every cargo into its store, Food and raw cargo included. Store with Cargo > Store anywhere within 500 m of the Tycoon tent: your aircraft's position counts, not where the crates come to rest. Each crate costs the storage fee, see Cargo.
It also takes deliveries for its own Projects. Cargo > Deliver from the same 500 m binds the cargo to them, up to what the largest single Project still needs, and pays the wage. Delivered cargo cannot be taken out again and takes no storage space. Food is never delivered to an airfield.
On the ground, crates are placed behind your aircraft, both when you unload and when you take cargo out of Storage. Further than 500 m from the tent, a Storage request is refused.
Storage
All cargo at an airfield shares one storage limit:
| Cargo Warehouse | Storage limit |
|---|---|
| none | 8 crates |
| Level 1 | 16 crates |
| Level 2 | 24 crates |
- Full storage: further crates are refused. The crate stays on the ground (see Restarts).
- Taking cargo out:
My Location > Storagereturns the stored crates and frees their place at once. A crate taken out is the same crate that was stored. The menu shows the fill level asStored x/y. - Food stored at an airfield supplies no Settlement until it is flown on.
Upgrades
Every building at an airfield is a site upgrade: it takes no build slot, cannot be demolished and has no Trust, supply or level requirement. Upgrades are paid from cargo delivered there; stored cargo has to be taken out and delivered first.
| Upgrade | Levels | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Direction-Finding station | 3 | Detects enemy activity and narrows rumor sectors, see Enemy Detection. |
| Cargo Warehouse | 2 | Raises the storage limit to 16 / 24 crates. |
| Workshop | 2 | Sells upgrades. Airfields with a runway only. |
| Insurance Agency | 2 | Sells insurance. Airfields with a runway only. |
Workshop and Insurance Agency cannot be built at a heliport, so every aircraft that needs them can land there.
Costs are listed under Projects.
Airplanes
The C-130J-30 carries up to 24 crates but cannot land on a helipad. It works a pad site from up to 80 m away instead - taking crates out of Storage, loading them and delivering them all use that same distance - and an airfield from within 500 m of the tent. It can therefore deliver straight to a Hub, City or Factory whenever it can park that close to the pad.
An airfield is still the natural hub for a full load: 24 crates rarely match one destination's needs, and helicopters fly the last leg faster.
